Seniors’ Resource Center Announces
Free Income Tax Assistance Program
Seniors’ Resource
Center, in partnership with the Internal Revenue Service, is
again offering its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program
in 2008, which provides lower-income taxpayers of any age with
free help in completing state and federal tax returns, as well
as earned income tax credit forms and rent and heat rebate forms.
Tax
assistance is available to seniors, the disabled, and others
with special needs who cannot afford to pay for professional
assistance. The VITA program typically provides assistance to
people who are filing forms 1040, 1040 EZ, and 1040A. Through
the VITA program, trained tax preparers will also alert taxpayers
to special credits and deductions for which they be eligible.
Tax
assistance through the Seniors’ Resource Center/VITA program
will be offered at 10 locations, from February 1 – April
12. Electronic filing will be available at four of these sites.
Home visits can be arranged for seniors and disabled individuals
who are homebound and who live in Jefferson County and west Denver.
All
VITA volunteers are trained and tested by the IRS. Annual training
for volunteers incorporates education on all recent tax changes
to ensure accuracy of assistance to tax filers who utilize this
service. In 2007, Seniors’ Resource Center/VITA volunteers
assisted more than 1,400 area residents to complete their state
and federal tax returns. To make an appointment, or to request
more information, please call the Seniors’ Resource Center
VITA office at 303-235-6921 Monday – Friday between 10
a.m. and 2 p.m.
