Most
Urgent Volunteer Needs as
of February 2007:
Visit an Isolated Senior Who Would Enjoy
Your Company
Seniors’ Resource Center receives
requests from many sources to arrange for Friendly Visitor volunteers
who can provide vital social contact for isolated seniors. Right
now there is a waiting list with not enough Friendly Visitors
to meet the need. Friendly Visitor volunteers receive training
and orientation, then are carefully matched with a senior to
befriend. Won’t you join us?
Assist with Minor
Home Repairs to Protect Seniors’ Mobility
SRC is seeking
minor home repair volunteers who can help build wheelchair ramps, handrails,
and install bathroom grab bars and steps for the disabled and seniors. This helps
to prevent falls in the home, which can diminish mobility for seniors and lead
to dramatically reduced independence.
Volunteers Needed for New Respite Care Program
SRC’s
in-home respite care program supports family members who are caring for a chronically
ill or frail older adult by placing a trained volunteer in the home. This allows
the family caregiver to rest and take personal time away. Training is provided.

Personalized
Services Provided
by Volunteers of Seniors’ Resource Center
Seniors’ Resource Center’s volunteer programs are designed to manifest
our mission of maximizing the dignity and independence of older adults. All
programs are powered by SRC’s nearly 300 volunteers, who donate thousands
and thousands of hours each year to assist low-income seniors and disabled
individuals with the following services.
Home Services – Volunteers
provide assistance with snow removal, seasonal yard work and
housekeeping (such as window washing or raking leaves), filling
out forms and sorting and reading through mail.
Bill Payment – Trained volunteers
provide ongoing service low-income, disabled or elderly clients
in paying bills and balancing their checkbooks.
Minor Home Repairs – Skilled
volunteers can assist with grab bar installation, smoke alarm
installation, minor plumbing and electrical repairs and other
miscellaneous repairs that would be considered “minor,” such
as small paint jobs, hanging of curtain rods, etc… Clients
are responsible for the cost of all materials associated with
the repairs.
Income Tax Preparation – Low-income
individuals may receive assistance with most simple tax returns.
Grocery Shopping – Volunteers
will grocery shop for those that cannot do this fundamental
chore for themselves.

afford to hire professionals. The labor is provided by our
volunteers, and the client pays for the cost of materials.
Medicare Counseling – Trained
volunteers can help you or a family member sort through the
many intricacies of the Medicare program, including Medigap
and HMO options, prescription drug assistance, doctor and hospital
bills and more.
Tel-A-Sure – Caring volunteers
will call on homebound individuals on a weekly or daily basis
to check on the client’s physical well being, as well
as provide regular companionship via the telephone.
Friendly Visitors – Friendly
visitors provide companionship to socially isolated or handicapped
elderly individuals by making regularly scheduled visits to
the person’s home or nursing home.

Dear Prospective Volunteer:
It has been my experience that there are two stumbling blocks
that loom in the minds of would-be volunteers. Number one is born
of modesty--many folks feel they have no talents or that the ones
they have simply don't apply to the care of seniors. How wrong
they are! If your only skill is a ready smile and a kind word,
we REALLY need you. The other issue, especially among the newly
retired, is a fear of hampering travel plans or limiting spontaneous
activities. Again, it's just not true.
Volunteers can decide how much time they
want to give and when they want to give it. We're experts
at tailoring our needs
to yours, and turning on a dime when the unexpected occurs. Best
of all, we have a quiet little miracle that happens here. Volunteers
soon become
friends-- with both staff and clients-- and their lives and ours
are instantly enriched. It's almost a given.
Sincerely,
John Zabawa
President/CEO
