“Everyone here is family,” said Shirley Sadowski, Coordinator of Seniors’ Resource Center’s (SRC) Southwest Plaza Satellite Office. “This has become the ‘front porch of friendship’ for a lot of amazing elderly people.”

Sara and Joyce

Take Sara for example. Sara is an elderly woman who lives with her son. She uses our visionary machine to go over her bank statements and write checks which ultimately allow her to be more independent. But, her vision is so poor, she can’t exercise her passion for reading.

Enter Shirley, who introduced Sara to her new pair of eyes, Joyce.

The two women struck up a unique relationship immediately. They share a love for reading and are now reading their third book together. Now, every Tuesday and Thursday, Sara and Joyce get dressed up wearing their favorite jewels, and meet to read together. They have both found a new purpose in life; friendship.

When Shirley first took over as Coordinator at SRC’s Southwest Plaza Satellite Office last February, there were only 50 participants a month. Today there are over 500.

“I make sure when people walk in and out of that door they have a smile on their face,” Shirley said. “I don’t want anyone thinking about their problems while they are here.”

SRC’s Southwest Plaza Mall is open Monday-Saturday: 9:30am-5:30pm and is located at 8116-G W Bowles Ave, Littleton, CO 80123 at the Northwest Entrance of the Mall. SRC’s SW Plaza offers a safe and convenient area for seniors to be dropped off and picked up by area transportation services. SW Plaza also offers free computer classes, caregiver support, referral services and social and educational programs. Drop-in and share some refreshments.
